Overview
Maguire Peak is one of the least populated areas in Sunol region. This route offers great views of East Bay hills, beautiful rolling grassy hills, and abundant wildflowers.
Need to Know
An early start is recommended as most part of the trail is not shaded and it can get very hot in summer.
Description
Maguire Peak Trail is accessed through Welch Creek Road. It is a narrow road with no real parking at the trailhead but you can fit in your car at the shoulder without blocking the fire/emergency entrance.
Head north along the road before finding
Maguire Peak Trail on the right. Follow this trail north as it winds along the contour of the hill. The trail is wide and well marked. After about 1.4 miles you'll come to a Y junction with
Maguire Peak Loop Trail.
You can run either direction but to follow the route as mapped head west (left) along the loop. At just about 3 miles into the run you'll come to the junction with Maguire
Summit Trail. Take a right on this but be aware that this section of trail is quite a bit steeper than the rest of it. Persevere though, because the peak offers gorgeous views of the surrounding—Mission Peak, Mt. Diablo, and Monument Peaks.
After enjoying the views at the summit, return down the steep trail and take a right to follow the rest of
Maguire Peak Loop Trail. Back at the junction with
Maguire Peak Trail take a left to follow it south and back to your car.
Winter and spring are the ideal time to run this trail when the wildflowers are blooming.
