During the Western Snowy Plover’s critical nesting season (March 15-September 15), activities on beaches designated for plover nesting are limited. Different rules apply to dry and wet sand. Pay attention to signs identifying what types of beach activities are permitted and what areas are open. It’s easiest to just remain on the trail and, once on the beach, run on wet sand only, close to the water's edge.
No dogs, whether on or off leash, are allowed in these areas.
Need to Know
A valid Recreation Pass or a day use fee of $5 is required to park at the Tahkenitch Dunes-Threemile Lake North Trailhead. There is potable water, as well as flush and vault toilets at this trailhead.
Description
This trail starts at the Tahkenitch Dunes-Threemile Lake North Trailhead, just off of U.S. Highway 101. After 0.3 miles, you'll pass a junction with the
Tahkenitch Dunes Trail #1353. Over the next two miles, you'll climb and then descend through a coastal conifer forest of towering trees and dense, lush undergrowth.
At 2.5 miles from the trailhead, you'll pass the northern edge of Threemile Lake and shortly thereafter, the edge of the coastal sand dunes, with views of the ocean. Another short run brings you to a signed trail junction and a view overlooking Threemile Lake. To actually visit the lake, you'll need to descend a short, but steep, chute of sand.
To continue on the trail, turn west at the trail junction and run out into the dunes. At 3.1 miles from the trailhead, you'll pass a signed junction with the
Tahkenitch Dunes Trail #1353 which you can use to make a loop if you don't want to visit the beach. To reach the beach, continue west through a small stand of shore pine and then beach grass to the ocean. A large yellow sign labeled 115A marks where the trail reaches the beach.
You can return the way you came or run north along the beach (
remember to run on the wet sand to protect Snowy Plover habitat) to where the
Tahkenitch Dunes Trail #1353 (Beach) reaches the beach. A large yellow sign labeled 115 marks where this trail reaches the beach. Follow it west to its junction with the
Tahkenitch Dunes Trail #1353, and follow that trail back to the trailhead to complete a loop.
