Description

The trail begins at the Walker Knob Overlook at Milepost 358.9 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trailhead is furthest to the left from the parking area. The trail traverses through a highland forest primarily composed of evergreens and birch trees above a fairly dense ground cover. Little Butt (elevation 5,620 feet) is about 2 miles from the parking area. At this point are two obvious side trails to a rock outcropping with a view northeast to Mount Mitchell (look for fire towers). Big Butt is approximately one mile past Little Butt. The trail continues on all the way until it intersects with NC- 197. Get there early for a 12-mile round-trip run.
