Need to Know

The only restrooms on this route are those at British Landing and in town. Check the weather for proper dress. Pack water. Cell phone service is pretty good throughout this route. No camping on Mackinac Island.

Runner Notes

This is a paved road and well kept. Runners need to be mindful of bicycles and horse droppings. Also be aware that the pavement can be slick during or after rains. Wind impact will be felt on the western side of the island.

Description

This is a paved "Highway" with no cars allowed. Just pedestrians and bicycle traffic, which can be heavy at times. This run is especially beautiful in the very early morning so that you can catch a majestic sunrise. One tip is to not forget your camera. From the center of town, head east.

As you follow this route, there is an opportunity to visit an arch rock. The location is marked and there are wooden stairs that lead to this site. The stairs are over 200 steps with an elevation of 149 feet above the lake, so keep that in mind. Traveling onward on 185, you'll pass otters and ducks in the lake along with an occasional deer on your left. Also be sure to gaze skyward as bald eagles are part of the wildlife mix.

As you travel you'll be passing mile marker posts so that you have an idea on your progress. Also you'll see various picnic tables and informational boards of native residents. British Landing makes for a good rest stop with restrooms. The route continues with views of Mackinac Bridge and the Straits of Mackinac. The route continues through town and you'll arrive back where you started.

Flora & Fauna

Gulls, ducks, otters, and the occasional beaver colony.
