Description

Starting on the south side of the Elk Mountains near the small towns of Marble and Crystal, this spectacular trail weaves its way high into the peaks above Avalanche Lake, just to the west of the imposing and awe-inspiring Capitol Peak.

Locate the trailhead on Lost Trail Creek Rd./FS 315 5.5 miles east of Beaver Lake (outside of the town of Marble). A high-clearance, 4 wheel drive vehicle is mandatory for this approach. If you do not have access to this type of vehicle, one can pay for a shuttle to the trailhead through one of the off-road services located in Marble.

From the hike's trailhead head north along Silver Creek, ascending higher and higher through large meadows, brightly lit aspen groves, and old growth conifer stands. Eventually, you'll ascend into the high alpine, where spectacular views of the surrounding peaks await you. Flow through this high alpine terrain taking in the beauty that this quiet corner of the Elk Range has to offer. A little over 7 miles from the trailhead, you'll start the descent into the Avalanche Creek drainage. If you choose to visit Avalanche Lake, take a right at the intersection with the Avalanche Creek Trail. The lake sits 0.4 miles from this trail junction.

If you are lucky enough to have brought your camping equipment with you and you registered for an overnight permit, find a majestic spot close to Avalanche Lake to pitch your tent. If you have chosen to tackle this route as a day hike, turn around and start the journey back to your vehicle at the trailhead.
