Description
Starting from Avon Street, enter Quarry Park and cross Moore's Creek on the bridge. Turn left to get on the Rivanna Trail. The trail passes under Route 20, then continues between I-64 and Moore's Creek for the next 1.5 miles.
During this section, there is one landmark that stands out to me: the Vulture Roost. You'll see, smell, and hear where a local colony of vultures make their home, as the trail passes through it for about 100 yards. Don't look up! This section ends at a part of Charlottesville known as Woolen Mills, which has an interesting history. and you can see the construction and industry over the past decades very clearly as you approach the train track.
The pedestrian bridge across the creek was washed out, but if you climb up to the train bridge, you can see an island that sits in the center of the Rivanna River, and a sign that names the location Holur's Overlook. On the other side of Moore's Creek, you can turn down to your right at the first road, then a right onto East Market Street in front of the Historic Woolen Mills Chapel. Take the left next to this and it takes you to Riverview Park, where there is parking or the option to continue the Rivanna Loop!
