Overview
This a challenging run. The staging area is good with water and restrooms. You then start down a steep trail into the canyon with a creek/stream. After you head out of the canyon, you'll come to the base of the mountain and a choice of several forks that can make the run short or long. You can choose to do various loops under the mountain or ascend and continue along the ridge with several worthwhile viewpoints. If you decide to do the whole run, make sure you bring lots of water.
Need to Know
Good restrooms and drinkable water at staging area. Bring lots of water. I went through almost 4 liters on a 90-degree day.
Runner Notes
Most of the lower trail is good trail, but up the mountain the footing isn't as good.
Description
It's called the Hellhole Canyon Preserve and Paradise Mountain is on it, but the names should be switched. The canyon is beautiful and lush. The mountain is on the edge of being desert brush. But the view from the top and running across the spine is quite breathtaking and well worth the climb.
If you're lucky, you'll get a breeze about halfway up and on top of the mountain. Most of the trail is very well-defined. There was a spot or two where I questioned which direction to go, but it became clear after a second or two. I've only been in the hotter months, which probably isn't the best idea. I went through 4 liters of water this time (early June). If you want a challenge, I recommend this trail, but be prepared.
