Need to Know
Restrooms are available in the campground near the top. The upper part of the trail can also be easily accessed from the road near the campground, but there's limited parking.
Description
This trail circumnavigates the south and west sides of Tunnel Mountain near Banff, and is open to hikers and mountain bikes. It can be accessed from Banff Centre (trail as shown) or from Surprise Corner, with both approaches converging in the woods before reaching the river. At times, the trail will closely follow the river but an alternate high-water path is available. The trail heads uphill towards Tunnel Mountain Campground, goes through a small parking lot on Tunnel Mountain Drive and continues to run parallel to the road towards several hoodoo overlooks.
Flora & Fauna
Most of the trail runs through a forest of lodge pole pines and limber pines (endangered species). In early summer, you may catch the scent of alpine honeysuckle.
