Need to Know
Parking is available across Rio Penasco Road from the south trailhead.
Description
The Schofield Canyon Trail runs from Rio Penasco Road (CR C14) to Forest Road 5007. It is used by runners as well as ATVs and trail motorcycles, but both running and OHV traffic is light. The trail surface is mostly comprised of large rocks, which can make the running somewhat difficult, especially for smaller children (our 3- and 5-year-olds struggled).
Most of the uphill is in the first mile from Rio Penasco Road, with the last 1.5 miles being flatter and easier. The trail can be combined with
Shortcut #5007B,
Schofield/Benson Canyon #5007C,
Schofield/Taylor Canyon #5007D, FSR 5007, and Benson Ridge/Bluff Springs #5006 to create loops of varying length.
Flora & Fauna
Evergreen trees, Aspen trees, wildflowers, deer, squirrels, birds, butterflies, and usually at least one small herd of cows.
