Runner Notes
Loose footing on western half of trail; take care especially on slopes.
Description
This trail branches off of the
Charcoal Loop Trail and offers something of the opposite to the easy-going Charcoal. The path is generally flat with minor obstacles for the east half of the way, until the trail takes a sharp turn right and heads downhill. This descent is particularly steep in sections and the trail surface is often covered in loose stones.
This combination makes for a precarious run, and even experienced runners should take care with their footing along this trail. With little vegetation in the understory, even in the summer, this trail can also be easily lost as it is not clearly blazed in all areas. The final stretch of this trail parallels a small stream with a pronounced gorge, offering views and the occasional swimming spot.
If you are staying in the Hilton Campground and are looking for a more challenging alternative to the
Charcoal Loop Trail, this is it.
