Need to Know
Watch for rattle snakes and steer clear of private property.
Description
This trail begins at the Holbrook Canyon trailhead by the Bountiful Temple. Cross the creek immediately and find the switch-backs that gain the ridge between the Holbrook and Mueller Park canyons. Aside from
Kenny Creek Trail #1603, this is the only way to gain this part of the mountain from the valley that avoids private property.
You'll eventually reach an old 4-wheeler road after finding a fenced-off water tank. Continue up this road until you reach the Christmas tree farm. From the farm, look for a foot-path that takes you further up the mountain, then turns back into a 4-wheeler trail. This will go and go, winding up the mountain through the trees, and can be quite overgrown in parts in the summer time.
Eventually you'll emerge into a clearing where the trail disappears. Look around carefully for landmarks so that you can find the trail on your return, then just pick a direction up the mountain and go. You'll eventually pick up the 4-wheeler road again, and find a short corridor of boulders marking where the trail crosses the Kerns River gas pipeline.
The trail keeps going and is a bit difficult to find in places, but just stick to the ridgeline. The views get better and better. The trickiest part will be a knife-edge ridge leading to the highest point along the ridgeline. It's not terribly hard or exposed. Take your time and find the easiest way around or over the obstacles and pinnacles. After topping out on the ridge's peak, you can continue east until you link up with the Great Western Trail.
