Not recommended in winter (with snow). Restaurants usually open from middle of April to end of October.
Need to Know
You can reach Wasserauen by train or by car. There is a parking lot and during busy days, some farmers rent out space on their meadows for parking as well. On good-weather weekends, all the available parking spaces can fill up very quickly from very early in the morning!
It is possible to swim in the lake, if you're so inclined. But be careful; the water filling the lake comes from melted snow and ice. So even in the height of summer, it is very cold and thus slightly dangerous.
One side of the lake is the sunny side, the other one the shadowy one. In spring, there might still be lots of snow on the shadowy side. Be extra careful if you decide to go around the lake and want to run on the snow. You may suddenly sink down to your knees or further. Besides, the snow tends to slide over the water and you can not always see that, so don't get too close to the water on snow, because you might actually no longer be running on snow, which is over firm ground!
Runner Notes
Can easily be done with normal running / training shoes.
Want to try it barefoot? Have a go at it, but bring some shoes along; running up and down might get tiring if you are not used to running long stretches barefoot and on hot days, the blacktop could be too hot.
Description
This is one of the easiest runs in the area. Expect lots of people on sunny weekends during running season. Even though there are some slightly steep passages, it is well manageable for most young kids and many elderly people. The path is mostly paved street. The very last part is not paved anymore, but with gravel.
Start out from Wasserauen. Simply follow the road from the cable / train stations in the direction of the mountains. After about 200 meters, no more cars are allowed and you have the whole road for running. There are no turns to take; just follow the road. Very easy and not really any possibility to take a wrong turn, even if you are completely unfamiliar with the area. The run takes about 1 hour in either direction.
If you want to do more running, there are dozens of further trails to follow from Seealpsee, but none of them is as easy as this one (didn't say all of them are difficult, though).
At Seealpsee, there are two restaurants (usually open April - October) where you can quench your thirst or have something to eat. At the opposite side of the lake, there is a small farming hut which serves milk, milkshakes, and an assortment of beverages.
There is a path going around the whole lake which is also easy to follow.
