Dirt road for the last few miles before the trailhead - follow signs for trail 65.

Need to Know

Some maps do not show the last sections of dirt road, so GPS navigation may work - just follow signs for trail 65.

Runner Notes

The first 3.5 miles features nice trail that is runnable though steep in sections. The last 0.5 miles have loose rock and may cause some rolled ankles.

Description

The trail begins in the forest and switchbacks up with occasional views to the northwest and southeast. Trail is well trafficked and easy to follow the entire way. Some steep spots along the way.

From about mile 2.5 to mile 3, the trail passes through an alpine meadow with beautiful views of Lake Pend Oreille.

Around mile 3.5, the trail leaves the trees and meanders over a scree field that is easy to navigate and is not steep. This last 0.5-mile section provides beautiful views in all directions.

The summit has a small stone structure and is frequented by mountain goats (saw 8 while I was there). Try not to let the mountain goats obtain salt from your sweat, sweat on your gear, or urine. Great spot for goat pictures, but please be respectful and responsible around them.

Flora & Fauna

Birds abound in the lower forest and meadow sections.
