Leaving Root Creek Trail, you follow two zigzags and then cross PCT: Highway 5 to Etna Summit. This is the start of a long but mostly steady ascent on a moderate incline. The first mile offers no views as you make your way through dense forest. Pass Bob's Hat Trail on your left at half a mile and Indian Springs Trail at 1.3 miles. As you continue up higher, you get rewarded with great views of Castle Dome and Mount Shasta. The final mile of the ascent is the steepest. Once you leave the trees behind, views are stunning in all directions. At 2 miles, with Castle Dome immediately ahead, the trail turns left and eventually ends at a gap just northwest of Castle Dome that offers spectacular views all around.
