Overview
This is a beautiful run from the bottom of
Glen Canyon Park to the top of one of the iconic mountains in SF. This run is almost entirely on trails, with a couple of choices to extend the run or add some more challenge.
Need to Know
It is very windy at the top and the main trail along Twin Peaks Blvd is littered with broken glass. Be careful if running with dogs.
Bathrooms and water fountain are available at the
Glen Canyon Park Recreation Center.
Description
Start at the park entrance near the
Glen Canyon Park rec center, where there are public bathrooms and water fountains.
Continue along into the park passing the rec center and ball fields. You can choose to stick to the trail on the left for more shade, or the right for somewhat more open views of the park. Either way, continue through the canyon following the sign for Portola Avenue.
You'll climb a slight hill then some steps to come up to Portola Avenue next to Ruth Asawa School of Arts. Cross the street and turn left along Portola on the sidewalk. Turn right at Twin Peaks Blvd onto the trail on the right side of the street. Continue the climb until a sharp right turn, where you can cross the street and continue on the trail for a shorter steeper run, or follow the street to the right along a barely maintained trail.
If you continue to the right you'll eventually be forced back onto the street, but there's a wide shoulder to run on. Keep ascending either on the trail or the street until you get to the flat section near the top. Summit the first then the second peak, reaching the 3rd and 4th highest points in SF. Enjoy the 360-degree views of the city, bay, ocean, and nearby mountains.
