Overview
Leaving from the small hamlet of Valnontey, you'll wind along the edges of the valley. Enjoy the stunning views of the Gran Paradiso, glaciers, and river below. The rifugios offer a warm space to rest and refill water. Or take a couple of days to do the tour and stay overnight to experience the hospitality of the rifugio.
Description
From Valnontey, head out past the Paradisio Alpine Botanical Garden. Take a minute to explore the gardens a bit before switchbacking up the west side of the valley. Before long the trail escapes what little amount of shade the trail has and crosses a cascading creek as it winds up the hill. The trail follows the babbling waters up the hill all the way up to Rifugio Sella. Use the facilities and fill up your water before continuing your trek.
Follow the trail south, mostly staying the same elevation above the valley. Enjoy the stunning views as you run along. Upon reaching Casolari Herbetet you can refill your water, but keep your distance from the Ibex families that tend to linger around here. Descend into the valley via a series of switchbacks and cross the Torrent Valnontey. If you're looking for a quick trip back, head down the path paralleling the river. However, to gain a little more elevation and get some spectacular views, head over to the other side of the valley.
Enjoy the stunning views of the Herbetet and Piccolo Paradiso before dropping back into the valley. Follow the path along the river back to Valnontey.
