Some sections of the full Cinque Terre trail are closed to due landslides and are set to reopen in 2024. Check closures before planning a trip.
Overview
This out and back can be traveled in either direction depending on your preference. This section is by far the most challenging section of the Cinque Terre.
Description
If done from Vernazza you'll start out ascending an incredibly steep section right at the beginning. The trail is narrow and winding as it skirts along the steep drop-offs of the coast on its way to Monterosso. The trail is rugged and there are a lot of stairs to navigate. Many hikers like to use trekking poles or walking sticks on this section. The views are stunning and you'll even get a panoramic view of all of the five villages along Cinque Terre.
You descend into the town of Monterosso where you can explore the Old Castle, the Church of Saint John the Baptist and the Convent of the Capuchin-as well as beautiful yet rugged beaches.
