Overview
This quick-hitting, out-and-back run provides one of the shortest and most direct ascents of Table Rock from the Old Idaho State Penitentiary/Caste Rock trailhead. Once at the top, runners can choose to explore a few trails and roads, though many of the trails to the southwest of the peak are favored by mountain bikers (
Rock Garden Trail - Trail #16A,
Rock Island Trail - Trail #16B).
Need to Know
Multi-use trails open to mountain bikes and equestrians.
Runner Notes
Like most foothills trails, these are great to run, especially for a bang-for-your-buck workout.
Description
From the Old Idaho State Penitentiary/Caste Rock trailhead parking area, find the pedestrian-only
Table Rock Trail #15 Connector to head up toward the
Table Rock Trail - Trail #15, which is open to bikes and equestrians. Continue west for a brief break in the fairly steep climb as the
Table Rock Trail - Trail #15 turns right (south) toward the peak.
Just over a mile from the starting point, the final steep climb begins. Less than 0.5 miles in length and over 300 feet up. From the top, expansive views over the valley, foothills, and city are your reward. Check out the
Trail Run Project mobile app for other trails to explore in this area or head back the way you came, with the option to continue over to the
#19 Shoshone-Paiute Tribes Loop.
