Need to Know
Park in the lot off northbound Colesville road just before the BP station.
Runner Notes
Excellent footing throughout.
Description
A packed dirt, 4-5 foot wide trail that skirts the northern rim of the Northwest Branch Canyon, with views to the south of the branch and occasional sightings of houses to the north. Excellent for the casual walker, runner or trail biker. Wooded and quiet throughout. Not very strenuous, but with enough ups and downs, excursions up stream chutes, and bumps and berms to keep things interesting.
The trail starts off the
Rachel Carson Greenway Trail/
Northwest Branch Trail a few hundred yards downstream of the parking lot on Colesville Road. If you want to descend to the canyon floor for a change of view or to make loops of different lengths you can take the short trails at Chutes 1, 2 and 3 that connect to the
Rachel Carson Greenway Trail. (A more complete map is available at
montgomeryparks.org/uploads…).
Flora & Fauna
Standard deer-browsed woodland, full of wild birds with an occasional deer.
