Overview
High Lake and Slide Lake are both high alpine lakes set in glacier carved basins. This route will visit High Lake and continue up to a pass showing views of Slide Lake and the Rabbit Ears formation. The trail continues on down to Slide Lake and can be further followed to Strawberry Lake, Strawberry Mountain and return via
Road's End Trail #201 for an overnight backpack. Or you can take a day run via
Road's End Trail #201 to Strawberry Mountain's summit and then use this trail to spend the night at a nice lake.
Description
Starting at the High Lake Rim trailhead, about 1/2 mile past the Road's End trailhead on Malheur National Forest road #1640, the trail is slightly downhill to High Lake. Fishing is excellent here and there are some good campsites along the shore. From here the trail climbs about 500 feet over 1 mile to a pass which offers excellent views of Slide Lake and the Slide Creek drainage.
Flora & Fauna
Eagles and Osprey visit the lake and deer are quite common.
