Description

The Vole Trail is a loop trail that begins at the southeast edge of the lower parking lot, near Larry's Shop. Along the edge of the forest, the trail is narrow and a bit more uneven with rocks and roots present. It has a number of hills. The higher elevation gives great views of the lake and bog below and rolling views of the prairie. Beaver activity makes the forest ever changing.

Just north of the Bear Trailhead, there is a small point, called Heron Point, that is a wonderful spot to sit and look out at the lake. There is a picnic table at this spot.

The section of trail that cuts through the prairie is mowed, wide and has a few steep areas. Along the Vole Trail, there is a prairie platform with benches for enjoying some shade and taking a break to observe the flora and fauna.

Flora & Fauna

Similar to the Deer Trail, this trail boasts a variety of prairie plants including: common milkweed, goldenrod, bergamot, grasses, blackberry bushes, coneflowers, daisy, etc. Bluebirds, warblers, hawks, swallows, ducks, loons, eagle, etc. can be seen and heard along this trail. Maple, oak, birch and poplar as well as a variety of ferns line the edge of the trail.
