Need to Know
Due to steep drop offs into the canyon and dangerous stretches of current in the creek, this trail is not appropriate for children or pets.
Description
A 4km one-way trail from the
Helmcken Falls parking & viewpoint to the thundering narrows of Gattling Gorge. The trail follows the top of the Murtle river canyon before turning northeast to follow the Clearwater river canyon so is (roughly) flattish with a final descent to the gorge.
The trail is well-signed, easy to follow, and reasonably well constructed. Signage is a bit of a sample-pack with a variety of methods including blue dots on trees as well as official park signs. Just a few hundred metres into the hike one will see sweeping views of the Clearwater River below as it meanders along the valley bottom after it passes the gorge. Several chutes/rapids can be seen from above as you follow the trail and you may even see a tourist helicopter carring sightseeing passengers along the river.
