Runner Notes
The lower section can be slippery when wet.
Description
Start at the junction of Islay St and Fulton Road. An easy walk westwards up the gravel track passes the
McGouns Track entrance but carries straight on. At about 250m an inconspicuous track darts off from the gravel heading rightwards into the bush. This leads to a minor stream crossing. From here, just follow the track - there is an initial section heading steadily up through regenerating bush before a long traverse section is reached running through established native bush. Keep following the track and climb steadily up to the bush line. The character of the track changes markedly and a (sometimes complex) track weaves through flax and gorse, flattening out and then climbing again before reaching the skyline track to
Flagstaff Walkway . If no-one has been this way recently a pair of trimming shears and a small saw may help negotiate the gorse!
If trying to identify the Davies as a descent from the
Flagstaff Walkway , there is a metal pole (sometimes with an orange pipe on) and a small cairn but it can be subtle. It's about 620m above seal level, and just above a major bend where the track transitions between running east-west and north-south.
