Runner Notes
This is a great trail for running as there is practically no rock at all.
Description
The
Comeback Loop is a multi use trail. Hikers and runners may encounter cycling traffic. It can be used in both directions but the easiest route is counterclockwise.
The trail begins and ends near the old WPA structure that serves as a picnic area. It takes advantage of the natural contours of the hillside. From the start, going counterclockwise, there is no significant elevation change making it a great trail for the kids. It will parallel the
Crushed Limestone Trail briefly before turning away for a very gentle climb. It continues along this way in a similar fashion without steep climbs and has several gentle descents.
At the south end of the loop is the intersection with
Pony. A gentle right hand turn will allow trail users to continue south on
Pony and turning left will continue the loop. A slight descent will reveal a berm to the right followed by a left hand berm. A very short climb leads to another descent. The climb from there is gentle and the grade decreases. As users near the top of the hill, one will see a left handed turn with a berm. Use caution and be alert for cyclists approaching from the opposite direction.
The trail descends and climbs once again to another high point before flowing gracefully into another descent and climb. There are several gentle up and down sections along the remainder of the route and one last climb into an open area signals the end of the loop is close. in this open area is the intersection with the Kiddie DH return trail on the right side of the trail. Do not enter that trail as it is one way. Just keep straight and the trail returns to where it started.
