Greenwood Park - #5 of the Broome County Dozen Challenge

This route is part of the Broome County Dozen Hiking Challenge. It consists of hiking the trails at the outer perimeter of the park, which is a combination of the Outer Loop, Woodland, Pine Ridge and Evergreen Trails.

When they are open, there are amenities, restrooms, a beach house, various rentals, and camping.

Many of the paths are quite wide paths of bare earth. Some are turf. There are some, mostly very small rocks and roots. In the early spring there is quite a bit of mud.

Some of the Outer Loop Trail is a (park) road walk between the campground area and the main parking lot near the beach. The route is a little over three miles in length. If starting at the beach parking lot and going clockwise, first the trail crosses the lake overflow area, then goes up a wooded slope that runs near one park edge.

By always taking the left hand path whenever there is an intersection with other trails one can remain on the perimeter route. The trail through the forest goes through areas of evergreens and mixed hardwoods. A few benches are available along the path. Eventually the trail crosses a wooden bridge downstream of a wetland.

The perimeter route eventually leaves the woods interior for a wide, mown swath of turf with woods to either side. This ends at pavement near the camping area, and the rest of the route is on the paved road back to the beach.

Mixed hardwood forest along with a planted evergreen grove. Foxes, bears, deer (and deer ticks). The lake has fish, Canada geese and mallard ducks. It is good habitat for forest songbirds.
