Overview

Nestled in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, this trail has spectacular views of Mystic Lake and the surrounding Beartooth Mountains especially on Frozen to Death plateau.

Need to Know

Parking is free at the Mystic Lake trailhead and there are also campsites here as well.

Description

Start at Mystic Lake Trailhead and begin a gradual uphill trail to Mystic Lake. Once here you'll take a left uphill a moderately steep climb to Frozen to Death Plateau. This area is frequently use to camp to attempt the summit next day. Traverse across this plateau approaching Tempest Mountain. Descend down to the saddle to scope out the last 200 feet of elevation gain. This section is very tricky and some people bring ropes to climb it. Proceed with extreme caution. The summit should be at the top of this tricky climbing section. Descend all the way back down the same way you came up.
