Description

This trail starts from the Baldy Mountain trailhead above the Durango Hills neighborhoods. Go a short ways uphill past the gate on FS071. Soon, the Mud Springs trail heads off towards the northeast through dense forest. The trail is skinny but well packed dirt and easy to follow. Cross a few small creeks and some grassy clearings. Especially in the clearings there is evidence of cows and some small muddy ponds.

About halfway to the top, you pop out of the forest and pass through some pretty stands of aspens. The grade steepens and the views to the east and south open up. You'll see the radio towers scattered around on the summit of Baldy Mountain. Just below the summit is a line of telephone wires. Instead of following this to Baldy, the trail turns sharply to the left (west) and crosses over to end at FS 071. To reach the top of Baldy, take a right on the dirt road FS 071 and follow it to the radio towers and nice views of the surrounding hills to the east and south.
