Cove Lake State Park is open from 8:00 am to Sunset Eastern Time throughout the year.
Description
The storybook trail starts close to the fishing pier on cove lake down from the parking area. The trail goes in a counter-clockwise direction and tells the story of Owl Moon by Jane Yolen, and illustrated by John Schoenherr. Along the paved trail, there are wooden panels that tell the story and ask questions that are meant to foster thought and interaction with your kids or members of your party.
For example, one of the panels asks if you can whistle like a train and asks you to imitate the sound that a train makes. This relates to the train whistle that is mentioned in the story. The trail follows the lake for a short distance, crosses a bridge, and circles back to the beginning of the trail. Along the way, keep your eyes out for various species of birds that call the lake and marshy areas home, as well as other animals that are common in the ecosystems of the lake. From the end of the trail, you can follow the trail back to your car, or the playground that is close by where your kids (or you) can continue your adventure while you enjoy great views of Cove Lake.
Flora & Fauna
The trail runs along the lake for a while before crossing a bridge over a more marshy area, so be on the look out for ducks, egrets, and other birds that call the lake home. Amphibians and reptiles can be seen as well, depending on the time of year.
