Overview
Though and our-and-back run on
Picture Rock is typically plenty for most people, adding on the loop at the top affords some nice views and a little more solitude.
Need to Know
Be prepared to share the whole route with hikers, bikers, and trail runners—however, there are no dogs allowed on these trails.
Description
Starting at the Lyons trailhead, the
Picture Rock trail is a great route that offers a beautiful and steady climb up the backside of Heil Valley Ranch. The route starts off in the open with great views of the valley. That said, there is a lot of sun, so come adequately prepared with sun protection! As you reach the switchbacks, there will be some more trees around, but you won't get real shade until you start the loop at the top. There are also more rocks and roots as you get to this junction. There is a bench to rest on at the junction with but I'd recommend continuing on since you still have some climbing to do.
You can run the loop in either direction, but make sure you watch your footing as the roots and rocks can kind of surprise you if you're tired at this point. Run around to the viewpoint that looks out the back. This is a wonderful spot for a rest and snack. After enjoying the views, continue on the loop (or return the way you came). The way down is steady and affords a nice gradual pace all the way back to the parking area.
