Overview

Follow a portion of the Colorado Midland Railway. Great views and great singletrack make this a fantastic loop on some of the best trails in the area.

Runner Notes

A fantastic loop that can be done in either direction. Counterclockwise is preferred (ending on Midland Bike Trail) can get a little monotonous). Not overly technical, but a few steeper sections, especially where the railway trestles once stood.

Description

Starting at the parking area on CR304 above the Collegiate Peaks Overlook (Midland TH), head east for a brief (0.1 mile) stint on CR376a. The road will turn, but you'll continue straight onto Midland Bike Trail, where you'll soon pass the turnoff for Sausage Link. Continue straight and enjoy the rolling singletrack as it follows the old Colorado Midland Railroad line. While relatively flat, the trail does gradually climb and you'll find some more difficult sections where the bridge trestles once stood. After ~2.5 miles, you'll reach a junction with Bacon Bits Trail #1450A & Unchained. Turn left and head onto Bacon Bits Trail #1450A.

Bacon Bacon Bits Trail #1450A begins gradually climbing immediately, testing your legs after the relatively flat Midland Bike Trail. Nothing too steep, and views of Mt. Princeton and the Sawatch Range will help propel you forward. Bacon Bits Trail #1450A rolls and flows for little over 1.5 miles. As you reach the end of Bacon Bits Trail #1450A, look for the Sausage Link connector on your left, which will take you onto CR376a briefly, before another left turn onto Sausage Link. If you happen to miss the turn, no biggie as Bacon Bits Trail #1450A will also take you to CR376a. Just turn left & look for Sausage Link.

Much like Bacon Bits Trail #1450A, Sausage Link begins climbing immediately. Wind you way up this short but tough climb and continue on through BV's version of slick rock. A few rollers await, but the trail trends downhill and the views are aplenty. After ~1.7 miles of Sausage Link trail, you'll find yourself back on Midland Bike Trail. Turn right to head back to the parking lot.

History & Background

The Colorado Midland Railroad carried supplies from Colorado Springs to Leadville & Aspen, running from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.
