Overview

This is an old gravel road that now serves as a hiking trail, and it's well worth the walk. Enjoy this quieter corner of Larrabee State Park, and a sustained climb on the road grade to a beautiful overlook of the Puget Sound.

Need to Know

The parking lot closest to the trail is the Larrabee State Park main parking lot located at 245 Chuckanut Drive Bellingham WA 98226. It requires a Discover Pass or paying a $10 per day fee for a temporary pass. This parking lot is small and fills up quickly on weekends. Across the street is more parking near the car camping lot but it is slightly further away.

Runner Notes

A smooth gravel road the whole way up to the top with a few steep punchy sections makes this an excellent trail to run up or down.

Description

A relatively smooth 4-mile climb with just under 2,000 feet of elevation gain. The last mile is the steepest. Start on Fragrance Lake Road and after about 3/4 of a mile there will be a fork in the road. Take the right-hand side split and follow the sign for Burnout. On a clear and sunny day, you'll be greeted with epic views of the San Juans, Puget Sound, and Olympic National Park. A wide and relatively open "summit" allows for great photos or a picnic. This trail can be used as an out-and-back or you can connect to the Lost Lake trail and make it a bigger loop.
