Overview
Fragrance Lake Trail in Larrabee State Park offers a scenic run through a dense forest and around a beautiful lake. The trailhead starts near the Clayton Beach parking lot and winds its way up through fern-lined paths and large trees. As you go up, you'll have views of the surrounding Chuckanut Mountains and glimpses of Samish Bay.
Need to Know
Bathrooms are available in the parking lot on the ocean side of Chuckanut Drive. The small official pullout for Fragrance Lake Trail is tiny and fills up fast, and it requires a Discover Pass to park there.
Runner Notes
This is a great climb and descent which is used in the Chuckanut 50k trail running race.
Description
The trail is about 2.5 miles one way (not including the
Fragrance Lake Loop around the lake), making it a moderate run suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
From the trailhead on the
Interurban Trail, climb the switchbacks to the first intersection. Take a left for a short trail to a viewpoint. Head right to continue the main trail. After more climbing with some switchbacks and rooty section, you'll encounter the top gate.
Continue straight ahead for a short way to the lake, where you'll be rewarded with peaceful views and the opportunity to relax by the water. It's a popular spot for picnics, swimming (if weather permits), and simply enjoying some of the best outdoors in Washington State!
Note that this is an extremely popular trail and you'll likely encounter lots of groups hiking/running on this trail during the weekends. If you are looking to avoid the crowds your best bet would be to go early in the morning or sometime during the middle of the week.
