Need to Know

Porta-potty at the trailhead. The North Fork Kitchen at the Bush House Inn, two minutes away in Index, serves a nice menu with indoor and outdoor seating in a historic building. The Sand Bar Tavern at the intersection with US-2 offers indoor and outdoor seating at an eclectic bar.

Description

From US-2, turn onto Index-Galena Road and drive 0.9 miles to the parking area, just before the bridge across the Skykomish River into Index. The trail is singletrack with no side trails. The initial half mile is of moderate steepness, passing a small creek before flattening out before a bench at a small waterfall. Shortly beyond this, about 0.3 mile of switchbacks climb the steepest part of the ridge before the trail flattens. Another 0.3 mile on, cross a Bonneville Power Administration utility trail and pass underneath the high voltage lines. This open area offers a panoramic view of the Skykomish Valley foothills. Continuing past the power lines, the trail ends just beyond the crest of the ridge, providing a view of Bridal Veil Falls and Mount Index directly ahead and Baring Mountain to your left. This is a pleasant area to sit and enjoy the view before returning down the trail.
