Overview
Part of the Continental Divide Trail, the Wyoming Trail off Rabbit Ears Pass is a popular hiking, backpacking, and mountain biking route. It traverses through meadows of wildflowers, pine forests, and lakes, and it can be used as the starting point to backpack all the way into the Zirkels. The route mapped here turns around at Elmo Lake, but day hikers could instead do this as a point-to-point shuttle coming down Fish Creek Falls Trail.
Description
Starting from the north side of Dumont Lake heading generally northwest, the route begins as a doubletrack. The trail eventually transitions to singletrack and parallels Base Camp Rd. After the initial section of rolling terrain, stay left at the campground road and then keep straight at all intersections to the next section of the route.
From here begin a fun, twisty run down that ends at a creek and then transitions up a climb to Fishhook Lake. After running along the east side of the lake, stay left at the intersection for Lost Lake. Continue your journey through rolling, sometimes rocky, terrain to Lake Elmo, where you can have lunch, take a dip, and turn around.
Other options to continue include staying straight for Buffalo Pass. Or turn left and connect with either
Mountain View (and Steamboat Ski Area) or Fish Creek Falls Trail.
