The trail is open year-round from dawn to dusk. Motorized vehicles are prohibited, and pets must be leashed. Visitors should carry out all waste and use caution when crossing bridges and roads. There are multiple parking and trail access points, including Falmouth Boat Access, Riverfront Park in Marietta, and Columbia Crossing River Trails Center in Columbia.

Runners will appreciate the trail's well maintained surface which offers a mix of shaded areas and open spaces. The relatively flat terrain is ideal for both casual jogs and longer runs. Key points of interest such as the White Cliffs of Conoy and Chickies Rock County Park provide picturesque backdrops and opportunities for mid-run breaks.

The Northwest Lancaster County River Trail is a 14-mile multi-use public recreation trail that follows the historic Pennsylvania Main Line Canal along the Susquehanna River. From Falmouth to Columbia, it passes through five municipalities, showcasing highlights like the White Cliffs of Conoy, Point Rock Tunnel, and numerous parks and historic sites. Activities include walking, biking, and cross-country skiing. The trail features asphalt and gravel surfaces, multiple access points, parking areas, and amenities such as restrooms and picnic facilities.

Notable points of interest include the historic Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center, which offers insight into the region's industrial past, and the Haldeman Mansion in Bainbridge, the birthplace of scientist Samuel Haldeman. You can dip off into town and get ice cream at GiGi's in the summer.

The trail also passes through Chickies Rock County Park, featuring the impressive Chickies Rock Overlook. This quartzite rock outcropping provides stunning views of the river and surrounding landscapes. The park is rich in history, with ruins of old iron furnaces and remnants of the canal era.

Accessible Scenic Views:

Visitors can access scenic views and facilities at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center and Riverfront Park in Marietta. At Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, located at the trail's eastern endpoint, there is accessible parking and restrooms. Visitors can enjoy river views directly from the center, which also provides exhibits and information about the trail and nearby attractions.

Riverfront Park in Marietta offers accessible parking and paved pathways, ensuring easy navigation. The park includes picnic areas and overlooks with beautiful views of the Susquehanna River. From the park, visitors can access the trail and explore the scenic route, enjoying the natural beauty and historic landmarks along the way.

Additionally, Falmouth Boat Access at the trail's northern end provides accessible parking and restrooms, making it a convenient starting point. The paved segments of the trail near this access point offer smooth and easy navigation, allowing visitors to experience the picturesque landscapes and historical features of the trail.

The trail features a variety of ecosystems, including floodplain forests, wetlands, and meadows. Flora includes native plants like wildflowers and hardwood trees. Fauna sightings may include deer, foxes, and various bird species such as eagles and herons. The Conoy Wetlands Nature Preserve along the trail is notable for its biodiversity, offering a haven for numerous wildlife species including turtles.
