The park itself is open daily from 8 am until 10 pm. A vehicle permit ($7/day, $35/year) is required to enter the park. Through Labor Day, the park office and River Inn Visitor Center are open daily from 10 am - 9 pm. This park has summer and winter trails (and maps) and trail access for hiking varies with the seasons.
Need to Know
The description here applies only during the summer season (see the park's summer map). Access for hiking or snowshoeing may be limited or not allowed during the winter season. No hiking is allowed on trails groomed for Nordic skiing. As at many Minnesota state parks, major trail intersections are numbered or lettered and these designators appear both on the park's paper maps and on signs posted out in the field at these intersections.
Description
From the main parking lot on the north side of the St. Louis River, cross the Swinging Bridge on the Carlton Trail and follow it to its junction with the Silver Creek Trail at Intersection 28. From here, you have the option of going in either direction around the loop this trail forms. The trail itself is wide, obvious, and easy to follow. Major intersections are numbered and often have maps at them. This is also the Hiking Club route in this park and sign indicating this will posted at irregular intervals. Between Intersection 30 and 37, this trail is part of the
Superior Hiking Trail (SHT).
