Need to Know
This route is most easily accessible in the summer months when a boardwalk makes crossing the tamarack bog easy. The trail is open in the winter months but the boardwalk is ungroomed and may be impassible due to snow. It is not ADA accessible in the winter.
Description
This is the Hiking Club Route in this state park. It's primary attraction is easy access to the varied and amazing flowers that bloom in the tamarack bog in late Spring and early summer. Park in the dirt lot near trail Intersection K (as shown on the park's summer map) and go north through Intersections W and I to Birchmont Beach Road NE. Be extremely careful crossing this busy road! Once across, continue on an old dirt road to Intersection and then on to Intersection G where the boardwalk starts. Follow the boardwalk (stay on it to avoid damaging fragile plants) to Big Bog Lake. Return the way you came.
Flora & Fauna
The trail follows a boardwalk across a tamarack bog that (in season) is carpeted with showy lady's slippers, pitcher plants, dragon's mouth, grass pink, and insect-eating sundews. Most flowers are blooming in the bog during late spring and early summer.
