Overview
One of the most popular routes on the eastern flank of the Los Padres, this trail, often known as the punchbowls, is frequented in the spring and summer for swimming amidst the geologic depressions. There are swimming opportunities and waterfalls along the out and back.
Need to Know
No restroom or water at the trailhead. Do not park on the road, only in one of the dirt lots off the road shoulder. Parking is limited and this trail is very popular, so try to do this on a weekday or arrive early in the morning if you can. Please be considerate of the landscape - this trail often needs clean up due to graffiti or trash due to high usage - it is a classic after all!
Description
This trail is straightforward regarding route finding as it is an out and back. Tall rock walls rise on either side for much of the way, and there are some drop offs near the trail to be mindful of. Be prepared for some steep sections and some creek crossings.
You can continue upstream as far as you like and find the swimming hole of your choice. The route mapped here takes a turn on
Last Chance Trail to reach the Punch Bowls, which is one of the best places to swim and makes a reasonable turnaround point for a day hike.
If desired, you can continue on
Santa Paula Canyon Trail beyond this junction and explore farther up the canyon. Many people make this an overnight trip by staying at one of the backcountry campsites higher along the trail.
