Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park is open from sunrise to sunset throughout the year.
Need to Know
There are no services along the trail, so if you need to use the restroom or get water, the visitor center is your best option. The trail is mostly shaded, especially once you pass the horse barn and enter the woods, throughout the day, so you aren't hiking in the sun throughout the day.
Runner Notes
The trail is an old carriage road, so it is wide and has very few obstructions on it. You can combine it with other trails in the area for a nice run.
Description
The Upper Meadow Road is an old carriage road that connects the visitor center and mansion area of the site with the
Mountain Road. Parking for Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is located at the Billings Farm and Museum. Cross the road and make your way into the park. Stop at the visitor center on your right if you need to get water, maps, information about the park, or to use the restroom. Once done at the visitor center, pass the mansion and the Belvedere house.
The trail continues uphill past the old horse shed and enters the woods. The junior ranger trail breaks off to the right as you continue forward and to the left. A trail that leads up to North Peak and the Precipice Trail breaks off to the left shortly after entering the woods, but our trail continues straight ahead. A connector trail that drops down to
Mountain Road on the right hand side of the trail. You'll notice an old stone wall off to the left hand side of the trail that remind us that this use to be a working farm.
Continue straight ahead until you arrive at the junction with
Mountain Road. From here you can go to the left and explore more areas of the park, including the Pogue, South Peak, French Lot Overlook, and the King Farm Overlook. If you are short on time, you can turn to the right and make your way back down to the entrance, visitor center, and parking lot. This trail serves as a great alternative to the
Mountain Road Trail if you are trying to get back to the visitor center from the Pogue or other trails within the park as it leads directly back to the visitor center.
Flora & Fauna
Deer may be seen in the woods, especially in the morning or evening time.
