Overview
The
Broadside Trail to Lower
Sunset loop offers a moderately challenging run through diverse terrain and especially lush forest on Mount Elden.
Description
Starting on
Broadside Trail, you'll ascend steadily through a beautiful ponderosa and mixed conifer forest, gradually gaining elevation as you make your way up the mountain.
Once you reach the higher point on
Broadside, you'll descend on Lower
Sunset Trail, which takes you through a shady, north-facing drainage with old-growth forest. Although mostly smooth, there are a few steeper and rooty sections as you go.
Near the bottom, make a quick stop by Schultz Tank, where you can enjoy views of the San Fransico Peaks behind the Lake. This area is great for seeing birds and perhaps other local wildlife as well.
Flora & Fauna
Particularly notable are the old-growth fir trees on this part of the mountain. Their tall trunks tower above, and their dense canopy shelters a lush understory of ferns, grasses, and shrubs.
