Need to Know
The trail is well-graded for climbing, although narrow and loose at times. Lower Brookbank is also popular for mountain biking, and you'll likely see riders on the trail. Not recommended for horses due to the steep and narrow sections towards the top.
Description
Brookbank Trail was rebuilt in 2022 after the original was destroyed by the Museum Fire and associated floods. Lower Brookbank now follows a sustainable grade and traverses out the southwest slopes of Dry Lake Hills. There are still plenty of steep sections and loose rocks on this route, but it's a big improvement from the old trail.
There are some excellent vantage points as you wrap around the ridge, looking back south over Flagstaff. Although much of the trail is through the burn area and rather barren once on top, the trail opens up into lush grassy meadows and some old-growth ponderosa, as well as a few aspen groves. From the top of Brookbank Trail, you have many route options in the upper Dry Lake Hills area. This trail is great as an out-and-back combined with Tawa or Upper Brookbank for a loop.
