This is a paved path leading out across a lava flow. This hardened lava, called basalt, erupted and coold in the open air less than 1,000 years ago—practically yesterday in geologic time. This rock is extremely young, and therefore barely weathered smooth by the elements. The pavement is nice because otherwise this jagged landscape would be very hard to walk across.

As you go along, imagine witnessing the lava's heated advance and dramatic cooling. You can see evidence in fins, fissures, and blocks scattered near the trail. You can also see the edge of the lava flow, where the layer of basalt ends and soil is revealed underneath. Read the signs at the trailhead and information at the visitor center to learn more about this volcano's not-so-distant past.
