Leaving Little Loop Campground, the trail passes the campground's amphitheater and then briefly becomes very steep before hitting an old dirt road where you turn right. Follow this dirt road for about a third of a mile, then cross the paved Vista Point Road. The trail continues on the other side past a closed gate. At three quarters of a mile, the trail leaves the dirt road and heads up the stairs to your left. The next few hundred yards are very steep before the trail levels out. Stay left at the junction at 1.2 miles to get to Castle Crag Lookout, a viewpoint with beautiful views of the Castle Crags and Mount Shasta and a number of benches. Reach the parking lot another 100 yards further.
