Need to Know

New Heart Trail was a collaboration between Coconino National Forest and Flagstaff Biking Organization. Flagstaff Biking Organization raised funds and pursued grants to hire ACE (American Conservation Experience) who constructed this outstanding trail in 2020.

Description

New Heart Trail is a steady climb up the east side of Mount Elden with sweeping views over the Painted Desert. This area of Mount Elden feels remote and gets far less traffic than the west side trails. So it's a farther drive from Flagstaff but more solitude and unique scenery are the rewards. A few stands of small aspens make this trail nice for fall colors. It can get quite hot in summer, and monsoon storms are also a concern. In the spring this side of the mountain melts out pretty fast, so it can be good in the early season.

This trail was made with mountain bikes in mind, therfore the tread is mostly smooth, switchbacks are plenty and the grade is never too steep. Sections of the old Heart trail are still in use, so hikers may find some alternative routes if desired.
