Overview
Taylor Mountain can be seen on the north side of Teton Pass when driving down the pass towards Idaho. Its impressive east face rises out of Coal Creek and draws many backcountry skiers in the winter. In the summer, this mountain is a worthy objective for any hiker or runner looking for a quick summit to tag. The summit can be reached from three different sides. The one described here is the most reasonable.
Need to Know
The east face trail can hold snow until mid-summer. Consider an ice axe if early season.
Description
Start at the Coal Creek trailhead on the Idaho side of Teton Pass. The
Coal Creek Trail keeps to the left side of the cascading creek, climbing at an easy grade for about a mile. Cross the creek and then the climb really begins. The trail heads up a mostly open and vegetated hillside with some access to water, but it is south facing so it could be HOT. Near the head of the drainage, about 2.5 miles from the trailhead, the trail begins to climb the mountain's east face. If it is early to mid season, there may be snow patches that to either cross or navigate around. After 1000 feet of climbing, you're on top of the ridgeline. Follow this spectacular ridge the rest of the way to the summit.
