Description

Seraque is "breathe" in Ute, the people indigenous to the area. Coal Basin Ranch is a public-private partnership trail system as the former operations base for Mid-Continent Coal & Coke. The area is now being restored with trails for free public recreation.

This is a short, sweet run along a historic railroad grade through the coal overburden zone and dark timber. This trail has built steps for a nice leg burner and leads to Ute Point overlook, which has outstanding views of the Redstone Cliffs and Hawk Peak.

From Ute Point, you can connect back to the other segment of the trail to form a small loop, or continue on to Sun Trail and further to Coal Basin Trail/USFS 1953. Total mileage as a loop from the parking lot is 1.4 miles.

The singletrack Breathe portion is hiking only. Watch for bikes at intersections.

Flora & Fauna

Mule deer, red fox, red tail hawk, abert's squirrel are common. Bear and mountain lion also are found in Coal Basin. Flora include spruce, ponderosa, Douglas fir, gambel oak; penstemon, larkspur, western red columbine and arnica.
