Ancient stonework, precision craftsmanship. In order to get this precise fit, a clay model of the needed shape was made and sent offsite to the quarry. A rough-cut stone would be returned to the site based on the model, and fine-tuned to fit.

The view of the ruins you see when you enter from the Sun Gate. The traditional "Inca Trail" brings visitors in this way.In ancient times, this was a (maybe the) main entrance.

Llamas share the trail on the way up to the Sun Gate. They are bigger than they look - watch your step so they don't bump you off the trail. Note the paving stones - the surface can be uneven at times.

Llamas enjoying the view. The llamas were brought in to help keep the grass cut low, but in a case of unintended consequences their poop actually makes the grass grow faster.

The Inca Bridge, at the lower left of the photo. It's actually planks over a collapsed section of the a pathway along a sheer wall. You can't get all the way down to it (too dangerous), but it illustrates the ingenuity of the people who built these trails.

A side trail when in the Machu Picchu park goes out to the "Inca Bridge". You can't get all the way down to the bridge, but it's a fun walk atop steep walls down to the viewing point.

Money shot! The ruins photographed from a common viewing point. The taller peak in the background is Wayna Picchu (or Huayna Picchu), and it is possible to climb to the top for a different view of the ruins. You need a special permit to do this - check it out before you go.

Conservation efforts within the park. The popularity of the park has put a lot of pressure on the park ecosystem.

The waiting area for the train. It is possible to trek the rest of the way to Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu, but we took the train.

The ticket office. There is one train for the locals (cheap, tourists not permitted) and another train for tourists (much more expensive, locals not permitted).

One of the nicer bridges along the route. It moves around a little, but it's well built.
